To become a minted Harvard lawyer, I studied myself sick.

That nervous anxiety for performance has been deeply ingrained in my adult life to this day.

I prepared for the LSATs so rigorously—with endless logic games, prep courses, and timed drills—that I got physically sick every other week leading up to the test. I scored in the 97th percentile; but did that test measure anything meaningful? It rewarded me for speed, for recognizing repetitive logical patterns, for spitting out correct answers. But none of these skills define a great lawyer.

Schooling in an Age of Anxiety

We live in an amazing, yet difficult time that comes with a confusing mix of technological advancement, material wealth, and at the same time deep anxiety, and uncertainty — and our children are not immune. 

With everything at our fingertips — from information to instant consumption — so much feels within reach, and yet somehow still out of grasp. We climb endless ladders, chase other's highlight reels, never ever reaching a goalpost that feels quite good enough.

Today during Springwell Circle, we held space for students to process the recent election results. Naturally, some students expressed frustration with the outcome, asking, "How could anyone vote for Trump?" I reminded them that, even though we are in Maryland, we can’t assume everyone in our community supported one candidate over the other; that at Springwell, we value people even if they think differently than we do, and that is one of the things that makes our community so special.
